Tropical & Exotic Asia | Marlin Darrah
May 18 @ 7:30 p.m. | Tickets $14/$12 | Marsee Auditorium
Set
sail with the world’s most traveled filmmaker, Marlin Darrah, on a journey to
many of Southeast Asia’s most intriguing, alluring and lovely countries. The voyage begins in Hong Kong, where we
visit many great sites found here in this famous and hyperactive Asian port
city. Then we travel south to several
locations in Vietnam: the exciting back
streets of old Hanoi; the dramatic beauty of the ancient karst limestone
mountains rising out of Ha Long Bay; the temples and markets of Nha Trang; and
to Saigon, the dynamic and hustling city near the great Mekong River.
Next
are highlights of mysterious Angkor Wat, in the country of Cambodia. This 1000-year-old marvel is the largest
complex of religious temples in the world.
From the ancient to the ultra-modern, the journey continues to the grand
trading entrepôt of Singapore. It is a truly exotic name for what is, in
reality, a most 21st century metropolis of commerce, shopping and fine
dining.
The
country of Indonesia is our next stop, with an exploration of the fabled Spice
Islands of Ternate and Tidore. These
were the dream islands of Magellan and many other European explorers, some 500
years ago. Meet the Sultan of Ternate,
in his beautiful tropical palace, for an annual celebration honoring his
family's 600 years of often-generous rule over this beautiful Spice
Island. The island people know him as a
man, but they also consider him almost a living god, and are eager to receive
his personal blessing. Then we travel to
the unforgettable and enchanting island of Bali, with its beautifully terraced
rice fields bordered by villages of artists, musicians and dancers. Still in Indonesia, we continue to the island
of Java, to navigate through the sea of humanity on the streets of the massive
capital city, Jakarta.
Finally
we journey to Thailand, to visit the densely populated and frenetic capital
city of Bangkok – with its great Royal Palace, fascinating shopping streets,
and busy market canals, with produce and other foods stacked high in small
boats paddled by merchants. Then to the Thai paradise isles of Similan, Ko
Phi Phi, Phuket and Phang Nga Bay for a
brief look at other exotic aspects of Thailand, “The Land of Smiles.”
