Forest Giants | Gray Warriner

March 23 @ 7:30 p.m | Tickets $14/$12 | Marsee Auditorium

California is a special place: home to Giant Sequoias, the Earth's largest living things. Bathed in coastal mists, lush redwood forests reach skyward, claiming title as the world's tallest trees... but is this really the case? Stories from the deep forests of the Pacific Northwest make a different claim.

California is also home to 'desert forests' of Joshua Trees and spring-fed oases of native palms that are among the tallest of all palms. Further east, the Sonoran Desert is uniquely defined by the prickly arms of another desert forest: the Giant Saguaro. Northern Arizona's Petrified Forest reveals immense trees turned-to-stone from the dawn of the dinosaurs.

Our search for forest giants brings us to spectacular landscapes and unique, exotic environments close to home but, in many respects, worlds away. Washington's rain forests are festooned with life. In Idaho, we visit moist, enclaves of western red cedars that seem distinctly out of place in the Rockies. They are! Some trees were alive when Homer wrote the Iliad and the Odyssey 2800 years ago. All are living relics: descendants from trees growing here millions of years ago when Idaho was much wetter and warmer.

Join the Seattle filmmaker who made the official films for Joshua Tree, Redwood, Olympic, and dozens of our national parks in this behind the scenes, spectacular look at our forest giants!
