Coming of Age in the 1960s

This program is a recital of compositions for solo percussion and mixed ensembles. Featured are the works of four American composers whose musical language was partly forged during the decade of the 1960s. Protest (the war in Vietnam, civil rights, feminism) was a salient aspect of the 60’s not only in social contexts but musically as well. Steve Reich, Paul Chiara, John Bergamo, and Charles Boone are representative of composers whose musical language was in part opposed to the dogma of Twelve-Tone serial composition and its tenets.

The performance is divided between solo works for percussion and pieces for marimba duo and a quintet for a mixed ensemble. Piano Phase (alternately titled Marimba Phase) by Steve Reich was written during Reich’s exploration of minimalism and “phasing”: a technique of using slight permutations of unison motivic elements. Charles Boone’s The Watts Towers is homage to the magnificent creations of concrete and glass by Simon Rodia. Four Pieces for Timpani by John Bergamo is a suite of short works of contrasting styles. Willow, Willow by Paul Chihara is scored for amplified bass flute, tuba, and three percussionists. It uses electronic effects as well as spoken (whispered) word and is organized in four distinct vignettes. Timbres and Blue Memories are solo pieces for marimba by Swedish composer Daniel Berg.
