Rubin, mezzo-soprano with Jennifer Taira, piano
September 21 @ 8 p.m. | Tickets $26/$10 | Marsee Auditorium
Mezzo-Soprano and author of the book Do You Dream in Color: Insights from a Girl Without Sight, Laurie Rubin will take her audience on a journey of adventure, self-discovery, and the roller coaster towards identity. Laurie believes that music lives and breathes in real time, and is always enjoyed viscerally when she and audiences can share the vulnerability, challenges, triumphs, tragedies, and joys conveyed through varying song selections. At the end of the concert, audiences will have a new found appreciation for classical works through the context she weaves in via stories from her own life, will be humming some of their favorite and most poignant musical theater pieces from the past and present, and will discover something new in her original songs which are current and poignant. A concert with Laurie takes you out of the concert hall and into her living room, and you will feel as though you have all gotten to know each other, even if you’ve only known her and other audience members for one evening. The program will include pieces by Liszt, Poulenc, Puccini, Sondheim, Rodgers and Hammerstein and More!
"a young mezzo-soprano whose voice is darkly complex and mysteriously soulful" - LA Times
New York Times chief classical music critic Anthony Tommasini, wrote that she possesses "compelling artistry," "communicative power," and that her voice displays "earthy, rich, and poignant qualities."
